At Least 2 Dead After a Shooter Attacked a Mormon Church

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN – Two individuals are dead following a shooting and subsequent fire at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, on Saturday, September 30, 2023.

Authorities identified the victims as Dale Satkowiak, 64, and David White, 72. Both men were members of the church. The incident prompted a rapid response from local law enforcement, who later apprehended a suspect.

The shooting was reported around 12:45 p.m. at the church located on Greenview Drive. According to initial reports, a male shooter opened fire inside the building. Following the shooting, the church structure caught fire, with investigators later confirming the blaze was intentionally set.

Police identified and arrested Curtis Lee Tarpley, 49, a member of the congregation, in connection with the attack. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton later announced charges against Tarpley, including two counts of open murder, one count of arson of a building, and three counts of felony firearm.

Investigation Underway

The motive behind the violent incident remains a central focus of the ongoing investigation. While early details were scarce, court documents and subsequent reports suggested the suspect may have harbored grievances against church leadership.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton condemned the act, emphasizing its profound impact on the community.

“This was a senseless act of violence that has absolutely no place in our community, especially in a house of worship,” Leyton stated. “My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and all of those impacted by this tragedy.”

Emergency services, including Grand Blanc Township Police and Michigan State Police, secured the scene, conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding both the shooting and the fire. The community expressed shock and grief over the events, particularly as they unfolded within a place of worship.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement expressing sorrow for the loss of life and offering condolences to the victims’ families, while cooperating fully with law enforcement in their investigation.
