UVALDE, Texas – More than three years after the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School, Uvalde opened the doors to a new educational facility on Thursday, a moment marked by profound mixed emotions as families of the deceased attended the ‘bittersweet’ occasion.
The new school, designed with advanced security features and a focus on healing, represents a significant step forward for the community. Yet, for many, the joy of a new beginning was inextricably linked with the enduring grief of lives lost on May 24, 2022.
A New Beginning Shrouded in Memory
The ceremony saw community leaders, educators, and local residents gather to celebrate the completion of the state-of-the-art campus. However, the most poignant attendees were the parents, siblings, and relatives of the 19 children and two teachers who died in the Robb Elementary attack. Their presence underscored the dual nature of the day: a testament to resilience and a stark reminder of the irreplaceable loss.
“It’s a beautiful school, a safe school, and that’s what our children deserve,” said Ana Rodriguez, whose daughter, Jackie Cazares, was among the victims. “But every smile I see here, every new classroom, it just reminds me of Jackie not being able to experience it. It’s a bittersweet moment that never truly feels sweet.”
The new facility, built on a different site and equipped with numerous safety enhancements, including reinforced walls, controlled access points, and advanced surveillance, aims to provide an environment where students can learn without the pervasive fear that has haunted the district. Counseling services and spaces dedicated to mental health support are also integrated into the design, acknowledging the community’s ongoing healing process.

School officials emphasized the meticulous planning that went into creating a secure and nurturing environment. Dr. Hal Harrell, Superintendent of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, spoke about the community’s collective effort.
“This school is a product of our community’s unwavering resolve to protect our children and honor those we lost,” Dr. Harrell stated during the opening remarks. “While no building can erase the pain, we hope it can be a place where new memories are forged in safety and peace, a place for our children to thrive.”
For many families, sending their children back to school in Uvalde has been a daunting prospect. The new campus offers a measure of reassurance, though the emotional scars remain deep. Some parents expressed gratitude for the new facility, viewing it as a necessary step for the younger generation.
“My youngest child needs to go to school, and knowing this place is built with so much thought for safety helps me sleep a little better,” shared Javier Cazares, father of Jackie and Rogelio Torres. “But the empty seats in our homes will always be there, a constant ache.”
The opening of the new Uvalde school marks a complex chapter in the town’s journey toward recovery. It is a day of mixed emotions, reflecting both the painful past and the hopeful, albeit somber, path forward for its children and community.
