A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines on the evening of December 2, 2023, prompting immediate tsunami warnings for the region and neighboring countries. The seismic event, which occurred at approximately 10:37 PM local time (14:37 GMT), sent tremors across a wide area, causing significant alarm among residents.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake’s epicenter to be about 21 kilometers (13 miles) northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur province, at a relatively shallow depth of 32.8 kilometers (20.4 miles). The shallow depth contributed to the intense shaking felt by millions across Mindanao.
Following the initial jolt, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a tsunami warning, advising residents in coastal areas of Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental to immediately evacuate to higher ground. The agency cautioned that destructive tsunami waves were expected to hit the eastern seaboard of Mindanao. Similar warnings were also issued by authorities in Indonesia and Palau, though these were later lifted as the immediate threat subsided.
“Don’t go to the beach, stay away from the coast,” Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol urged coastal residents during the warning period.
Initial assessments revealed a range of impacts, including structural damage to buildings, cracks in roads and bridges, and widespread power outages across several provinces in Mindanao. Hospitals reported treating dozens of individuals for injuries sustained during the quake, primarily due to falling debris or panic. Tragically, at least one fatality was reported in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, linked to the earthquake.
The powerful main tremor was followed by a series of significant aftershocks, with several exceeding magnitude 6.0, further compounding anxiety among residents and complicating damage assessment efforts. Authorities continued to monitor seismic activity and urged the public to remain vigilant and follow official advisories. Relief operations were quickly mobilized to assist affected communities and assess the full extent of the damage.
