SARASOTA, Fla. — Authorities in Sarasota, Florida, have arrested a local man following an investigation into the disappearance of several pet peacocks, which culminated in allegations that he killed, cooked, and consumed the exotic birds.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday the arrest of 47-year-old Edgar Finch, who now faces charges including felony animal cruelty and grand theft. The shocking accusations have sent ripples of disbelief through the quiet suburban community.
The incident came to light after Mr. and Mrs. Henderson, residents of the Heron Creek neighborhood, reported their prized peafowl missing over the past two weeks. Initially, they suspected wildlife, but growing suspicions led them to contact local law enforcement.
“Our peacocks, Princess and Apollo, were more than just pets; they were part of our family,” said Brenda Henderson, visibly distraught. “They’d greet us every morning. When they stopped showing up, we knew something was terribly wrong.”
Investigators, acting on a tip, obtained a search warrant for Mr. Finch’s nearby residence. What they discovered inside reportedly corroborated the grim accusations. Evidence found on the property included peacock feathers, remains consistent with poultry processing, and cooking utensils with traces of peafowl DNA.
“This is one of the most unusual and disturbing cases our department has encountered,” stated Captain Michael O’Connell of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office during a press briefing. “The suspect is accused of a depraved act against beloved family pets. Our officers have worked tirelessly to bring justice to the victims and their owners.”
According to preliminary reports, Mr. Finch allegedly admitted to capturing the birds, killing them, and then preparing them for consumption. The motive behind the bizarre acts remains unclear, though authorities are exploring all possibilities, including potential mental health issues or financial hardship.
Neighbors expressed shock and dismay at the allegations. “Edgar always seemed so quiet, kept to himself,” said Carol Jenkins, who lives across the street from Finch. “You just never know what goes on behind closed doors. To think those beautiful birds met such an end… it’s heartbreaking.”
Mr. Finch is currently being held at the Sarasota County Jail awaiting his initial court appearance. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as detectives piece together the full timeline of events and any other potential victims.
