A U.K. court has dismissed a terrorism charge against Mo Chara, a member of the Belfast-based Irish-language rap group Kneecap, following an incident involving a pro-Palestinian banner.
The charge, which alleged “arranging a meeting to support a proscribed organization,” arose from a performance in London where a banner displaying the phrase “Kneecap: Gaza on the Way” was unfurled. The incident occurred during a performance at the headquarters of the Shomrim security group.
Kneecap, known for its politically charged lyrics and outspoken stance on social issues, has previously expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The group’s music often incorporates commentary on Irish identity, language, and political struggles.
The dismissal comes after legal arguments were presented in court. Mo Chara described the accusation as politically motivated.
It’s a political charge. This is what we knew from the start. It was a very weak case. They knew they weren’t going to get a conviction anyway, so they just dropped it.
Ciaran Shiels, the attorney representing Mo Chara, also commented on the decision, asserting that the evidence presented did not meet the necessary legal standards for such a grave accusation.
The evidence clearly did not meet the very high threshold for such a serious charge.
The rap group has gained international attention for its unique sound and provocative performances, often sparking debate and drawing both acclaim and criticism for their political statements.
