SACRAMENTO, CA – A district attorney in California has stated that investigators believe a recent shooting at an ABC television affiliate’s office was politically motivated. The assertion comes as authorities continue to piece together the events surrounding the incident, which left two station employees injured.
Sacramento County District Attorney Eleanor Vance announced on Wednesday that preliminary evidence suggests the suspect, 37-year-old Marcus Thorne, harbored strong anti-media sentiments linked to broader political ideologies. Thorne was arrested shortly after the shooting on Monday evening.
“Based on the evidence gathered so far, including digital communications and statements made by the suspect, we believe this was not a random act of violence,” Vance stated during a press conference. “We have reason to believe Mr. Thorne’s actions were driven by a politically charged animosity towards news organizations, specifically targeting local media perceived as biased.”
The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 PM PDT on September 23 at the downtown Sacramento studios of KXTV, the local ABC affiliate. According to police reports, Thorne allegedly entered the building through a public access point and opened fire in a reception area before being apprehended by security personnel and responding officers.
A news producer, Sarah Jenkins, 42, sustained a gunshot wound to her arm and was treated at a local hospital before being released. A security guard, David Chen, 55, suffered a graze wound to his leg and was also treated and released. No fatalities were reported.
Investigation Details Unfold
Sacramento Police Chief Robert Maxwell confirmed that Thorne was found in possession of a handgun and additional ammunition at the scene. He is currently being held without bail and faces charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and felony vandalism.
“Our officers responded swiftly, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident,” Chief Maxwell said. “The investigation is ongoing, and we are working closely with the District Attorney’s office to examine all motives, including the political motivation highlighted by DA Vance.”
Authorities have reportedly seized Thorne’s electronic devices and are reviewing his social media activity, which is believed to contain numerous posts expressing extreme views against mainstream media and specific political figures. While specific details were not released, DA Vance emphasized the chilling nature of the alleged targeting of a news organization.
Representatives for KXTV issued a statement expressing gratitude for the quick response of law enforcement and support for their injured employees. “Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our staff,” the statement read. “We are cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigation.”
The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of journalists and media professionals amidst a charged political climate, where criticism of the press has escalated in some sectors.
