New York City witnessed significant demonstrations on Friday as hundreds of protestors gathered near the United Nations headquarters while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the General Assembly. The demonstrations, which drew a diverse coalition of activists, centered on various criticisms of the Israeli government’s policies.
The protests commenced in the morning, coinciding with Netanyahu’s scheduled speech. Demonstrators congregated along First Avenue, displaying banners and signs that called for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, criticized the recent judicial overhaul efforts in Israel, and highlighted human rights concerns. Chants in English and Hebrew resonated through the streets, drawing attention from passersby and international delegates.
Protestors’ Demands and Voices

Another demonstrator, Omar Hassan, highlighted the urgency of their message.
“The world needs to recognize that there can be no lasting peace without addressing the root causes of conflict,” Hassan said, holding a sign that read ‘End the Occupation.’ “Netanyahu’s speech inside the UN must not overshadow the reality on the ground.”
New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers were deployed in significant numbers to manage the crowds and ensure the security of the diplomatic area. Barricades were erected to maintain order and separate protestors from the UN building, with no immediate reports of significant clashes or arrests.
