Former F.B.I. Chief Responds to Indictment: ‘Let’s Have a Trial’

Former F.B.I. Director James Comey has publicly responded to the indictment of attorney Michael Sussmann, stating his belief that a trial would bring clarity to the facts surrounding the charges.

Sussmann, who previously represented the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, was indicted by Special Counsel John Durham in September 2021. The indictment alleges Sussmann made a false statement to the F.B.I. in 2016 by claiming he was not representing a client when he provided information about alleged connections between the Trump Organization and a Russian bank.

Comey, who led the F.B.I. at the time of the alleged incident, addressed the situation, indicating that a legal proceeding could serve to reveal the truth of the matter and illuminate the bureau’s handling of the information it received.

“Let’s have a trial. Let’s see what the facts are. Let’s see what is alleged and what the government can prove,” Comey said in an interview.

The indictment of Sussmann is part of Special Counsel Durham’s ongoing investigation into the origins and conduct of the F.B.I.’s inquiry into alleged ties between the 2016 Trump presidential campaign and Russia. The probe has faced scrutiny from various political factions, and Comey’s remarks underscore a call for judicial transparency in the process.
