Following the devastating “Lone Star Deluge” that inundated large parts of central Texas this week, former President Donald J. Trump, visiting the affected regions, appeared to adopt a noticeably different tone regarding the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Historically, Mr. Trump has voiced skepticism regarding the efficiency and operational methods of federal agencies, including FEMA, during his presidency. However, in the wake of the catastrophic flooding, his rhetoric has shifted towards commendation for the agency’s rapid response and coordination efforts.
During an unannounced visit to a FEMA-run distribution center in Brazos County, where thousands have been displaced by floodwaters, Trump praised the agency’s on-the-ground work. The floods, which have resulted in widespread property damage and several fatalities, prompted Texas Governor Greg Abbott to declare a state of emergency across 53 counties.
“I’ve seen firsthand what FEMA is doing here, and it’s truly remarkable,” Trump told reporters gathered outside the temporary shelter. “They’ve gotten in quickly, they’re getting supplies to the people who need them, and the coordination with state and local officials is, frankly, incredible. They’re doing a fantastic job under very difficult circumstances.”
This positive appraisal marks a departure from some of his previous comments. During his time in office, Trump frequently criticized federal bureaucracy and, at times, FEMA’s response to specific events. His current remarks highlight the agency’s swift deployment of resources, including search and rescue teams, medical aid, and logistical support for displaced residents.
FEMA has reported deploying over 1,500 personnel to Texas, alongside hundreds of vehicles and several search-and-rescue boats, since the initial onset of the torrential rains. The agency is actively involved in setting up temporary housing, distributing food and water, and assisting in damage assessments.
Trump’s visit included meeting with emergency responders and flood victims, where he reiterated his support for the federal assistance efforts. His change in emphasis on FEMA’s role could signal a broader acknowledgment of the agency’s critical function in national disaster response.
“When you see an operation running this smoothly, getting help to where it’s needed most, you have to give credit where credit is due,” Trump added. “FEMA is delivering for the people of Texas.”
The extent of the damage in Texas is still being assessed, but officials anticipate a prolonged recovery period, during which federal assistance will remain crucial.
