Carbon monoxide, not just oxygen, could be a precursor to alien life
A new study suggests that carbon monoxide gas, which prevents blood from carrying oxygen, could be a promising ‘biosignature’ for alien life. Red dwarfs, such as Proxima Centauri, the star nearest the Sun, could have exoplanets that are rich in oxygen and also contain an ‘abundance of carbon monoxide.’ The theory was developed using the Earth’s past as a guide to search for extraterrestrial life in the universe.
